The Cyprus
Society of Cardiology

Founded in 1977. Number of members: 106.

The Board has nine members, elected by
the General Assembly for a 2 year term.
A General Assembly takes place yearly in
April.

The Cyprus Society of Cardiology is the
official scientific representative of
Cyprus in the held of cardiology
(recognized as such, in 1979, by the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the
Republic of Cyprus).

Member of the European Society of
Cardiology (since 1980).
-
Member of the International Society and
Federation of Cardiology (since 1981).
-
Founding member of the Cyprus Heart
Foundation (1991).
Aims
-
To promote knowledge concerning the
cardiovascular diseases for the benefit
of its members, of the medical
profession and of the public in general.
-
To assure the best scientific and
professional conditions for the practice
of cardiology.
-
To maintain the highest possible
standards in the profession.
The role of the CSC was instrumental or very
significant in the following
-
Organization at the Nicosia General
Hospital of a department for clinical
cardiology with hemodynamic laboratory
(1987) and of a cardiac surgery unit
(1989).
-
Creation of the Cyprus Heart Foundation
(1991).
-
Campaigns for the prevention of Heart
Diseases.
-
Efforts to create in Cyprus a
non-profit, independent and autonomous
Cardiac Centre of Excellence.
-
Annulation of certain articles of a
proposed legislation concerning the
National Medical Scheme which were
considered as downgrading the practice
of cardiology (1996).
-
Approval of legislation safeguarding the
medical specialties.
-
Ongoing effort to support and upgrade
the private practice, which had been
suppressed, in order to achieve equal
status and progress of both sectors,
public and private.
-
Ongoing effort to establish an
independent quality control committee on
cardiac-surgical operations.
